Why does responsive design matter?
In an era where mobile and tablet access to websites is starting to outstrip desktop and laptop access ignoring these visitors is becoming commercial suicide.
Google says if possible to go with the responsive design approach. This is where the site technology alters the way the page renders (lays out) on mobile devices.
Google says the advantages of this method include having one URL making it easier for your users to interact with the page and enable Google's "algorithms to assign the indexing properties to your content." It is also more efficient when Google is crawling your content because Google doesn't have to crawl multiple pages.
Responsive = mobile friendly.
Google say that some 8% of their algorithm looks at mobile and tablet responsiveness, making it equally as important as meta tags (8%) site speed (5%) and a bigger share of points against things like the age of the site, keywords listed on pages and meta description tags. Whilst the biggest ranking influences remain regular site content updates and links responsiveness not only adds to ranking results but has a major impact on visitor engagement.
Nonresponsive responsive sites that use older menu systems can become completely unusable on a mobile, as do certain forms, lists and even images.
